The PLT File Format

HPGL is the Hewlett-Packard Graphics Language designed for specifying 2D graphical information for the HP range of plotters. It was not intended as an interchange format but some software suppliers use it as such. HPGL is a command set embedded in the ROM of pen plotters to help reduce the work required by applications programmers to create plotted output. HPGL uses two-letter mnemonics as instructions for drawing lines, circles, text, and simple symbols. HPGL is the primary printer control language used by Hewlett-Packard plotters. PIX Import for SolidWorks is a Dr. Picza (.pix) file import add-in for SolidWorks®. This add-in gives SolidWorks the ability to import geometric data from PIX files.

PIX Import for SolidWorks reads surface and polygon mesh data stored in PIX files and imports it into SolidWorks. If the PIX file contains a scan of a surface PIX Import for SolidWorks creates a single trimmed surface describing the scanned surface. This surface can be converted into a solid by giving it a thickness. If the PIX file contains the scan information in the form of a polygon mesh PIX Import for SolidWorks creates a body describing the object that was scanned. A polygon mesh in a PIX file is comprised of a set of quad faces. PIX Import for SolidWorks creates trimmed planar surfaces for each quad and knits them together to create a body. If the polygon mesh is closed (i.e. it does not contain boundary edges) then PIX Import for SolidWorks will create a closed body feature, otherwise an open surface will be created.

The PIX file format is the native file format of a digitizer software called Dr. Picza which comes bundled with Roland DG digitizers. The digitizer scans an object and transfers the 3D point data to the Dr. Picza software which saves it in the PIX file format. PIX files can contain scan data in two formats: surface and polygon mesh.

NC Import for SolidWorks is a Numeric Control NC program (.nc) file import add-in for SolidWorks®. This add-in gives SolidWorks the ability to import toolpath data from NC program files.

CNC Machines worldwide use Numeric Control (.nc, .ncc or .cnc) files to convert programmed instructions to tool movement. NC programs consist of a sequence of codes with parameter data to arrive at a precise description of the toolpath. NC Import for SolidWorks reads NC program files and recreates the toolpath. The tool movements programmed in NC files are converted in into corresponding line, arc or circle objects and added to the active document as a 3D Sketch in a part or assembly document or as 2D Curves in a drawing document.

The NC File Format

Numerical Control (NC) was the precursor of today's Computer Numerical Control (CNC), which controls the automation of machine tools and the inherent tool processes for which they are designed. The set of instructions, or "program" (usually an ASCII text file in which, in its simplest form, a line of text specifies the axial coordinates of a point in the work envelope) is prepared from a blueprint or CAD file and transferred to the memory of the CNC via floppy drive, serial data interface or a network connection. Once stored in the CNC memory and selected, the program is executed by pressing the appropriate key on the machine operator panel.
